How Many “Shades of Grey” Chess Tables Does One Artist Need?
For this show? At least two!
I’ve had this ornate drum table for about a year now … a friend donated it to me, wanting me to unleash some paint-magic upon it. Here she is, in her naked-primed stage, awaiting paint. After painting the previous “Shades of Grey” chess table, I could feel this one wanting to be her own version of that theme.
Say no more! I’m on it!
Given that her top had a lovely center circle already in place, it would be the perfect place to paint a chess board.
I wanted to audition a new-to-me paint technique on the top. Rather than do my traditional faux-marble, I opted for a “smoky” technique, using just black and white, swirled together.
I loved the look of it … but it felt too “stark” to me. So, I had the inspiration to use a pearlescent aqua glaze over the top, also swirled … I LOVE to get an inspiration, and to take inspired action … eager to see what the results turn out to be!
I was NOT disappointed! I painted flat black around the perimeter of the circle, to frame it, and give it gravity.
Then came the oh-so-fun challenge of painting all of the other areas in shades of black, white, grey and silver … and then adding details … silver roses upon the medium grey … white dots upon the black fields … black stripes upon the white fields … and it all fell together … magically!
Here, you can see the final version of the table … from the front, and with the chessboard added – Voila! A magnificent piece of furnARTure, to serve as an everyday occasional table, and a worthy foundation for an intimate game of chess.
This table, and SO much more, will be on display, and for sale, at my upcoming solo art show, “Everything Old is New Again,” at the fabulous Lunaria Gallery, in Silverton, Oregon, for the entire month of March. You are invited to attend the grand opening on Friday, March 4th, from 7-9pm.
